WINTERPORT AND BANGOR - Earl E. Lee, SMSGT, USAF (Retired), 84, husband of Gloria (Moody) passed away, November 16, 2013, at a local nursing home. He was born November 15, 1929, in E. Millinocket, the son of Harold B. and Neva (Noble) Lee.
Earl attended schools in E. Millinocket and graduated from Schenck High School in 1947. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and after basic training and supply school he was assigned to Truk, Eastern Caroline Islands as a storekeeper until August 1951 when he was reassigned to USS Talladega (APA 208) until August 1952. After his discharge he joined the family business of H.B. Lee Store in E. Millinocket. In 1954 he joined the Air National Guard and became a full-time technician in March 1957. He retired from the guard in November 1989 as the Computer Superintendent, with over 41 years military service. Earl’s service awards include Air Force Commendation with oak leaf, Meritorious Service Medal and numerous other awards. He was awarded the Charles Hamlin Society award for his generosity to the EMMC. He was a lifetime member in the Eddington Salmon Club, the Orrington Rod and Gun Club and the American Legion Post 138. He was a member of the Hampden and Winterport Senior Citizen groups and enjoyed many outings with them. He loved gardening, woodworking, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed getting ready for the church fair with his doll houses, lighthouse with accompanying innkeepers house, wooden trains, trucks, bird houses and feeders, etc. and being part of the bean hole fire crew along with Lloyd, Phil, Warren and Walter. He will be remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Surviving in addition to his wife Gloria of 60 years, are his children, a son, Earl (Rusty) Lee II of Newark, DE; a daughter, Debra Shannon and her husband Christopher of Woodbridge, VA; grandchildren, Matthew J. Shannon of Boston, Anna Marie Lee of Rochester, NY, and Laura Louise Lee of Newcastle; a sister-in-law, Martha Worster of Winterport; and many nieces and nephews. Earl was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Margaret Boynton of E. Millinocket, and Catherine Markie of Manchester, CT; and a brother, Wendell Lee of Appleton, WI.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 30, 2013, at the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, 44 Kennebec Rd., Hampden, with the Rev. David Nicol, officiating. A reception will be held in the church Fellowship Hall, following the service. Interment will be private for the family at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
