BANGOR – Edgar Brown Jr., 95, died January 11, 2015 at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born September 27, 1919 in Portland, son of Edgar B. and Eunice L. (Varney) Brown.
Edgar served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War. He was a life member of the DAV. Edgar’s early years were spent in Freeport where he was a hand sewer in several shoe factories. He graduated from Portland University with a degree in Business Administration in 1960. After working 6 years in Houlton as a Representative of the State Welfare Department, he was Bangor’s Welfare Director from 1966 until his retirement in 1981. He then served two terms on the Bangor City Council. Edgar was a member of the Hammond Street Congregational Church where he served many years as Deacon. He enjoyed serving Home Communion to shut ins. Playing Duplicate Bridge was a favorite pastime, at which he earned Lifemaster.
Edgar was the oldest of 6 children but he is survived by only one sister, Marilyn Groves of Freeport. He is also survived by his wife of 67 years, Barbara (Hilton) Brown of Bangor; daughters, Susan Johnson and her husband, Paul of Orrington, Marsha Blake of Philadelphia, PA, Brenda Doughty and her husband, Timothy of Pittsfield and son, Paul Brown and his wife, Marie of Bangor. Also surviving are several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11am Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Hammond Street Congregational Church UCC, 28 High Street, Bangor with the Rev. Dr. Mark Allen Doty officiating.
