Brewer, ME – Edgar A. Lachance Jr., 88, born July 5, 1935, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024 after a short illness and stay at the Maine Veterans’ Homes in Bangor.

Eddie was born in Lewiston, ME, the only child of Edgar Sr. and Maria Lachance of Canada. Soon after he was born, the family moved to Plymouth, NH where he grew up and worked on the Thayer Farm. Eddie was brought up speaking French within the home and in 1953; he graduated from Plymouth High School.

In 1955, Eddie enlisted in United States Air Force where he studied photography at Lowry AFB in Denver Colorado and earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award and the permanent rank of Sergeant. Unfortunately, due to an accident involving a fire, which burned 62% of his body, Eddie was forced to retire from the service in 1959. This accident in no way slowed him down. In 1961, he traveled across the country to study the economic conditions within the US; enrolled in college and married Mary A. Duval whom he met at the VA Hospital in White River Junction, VT while he was receiving treatment for his injuries. After graduating from Windham College in Putney, VT with a BA in Economics, he and his wife worked for Phillips Petroleum Company a.k.a. Phillips 66 in Denham, Massachusetts. In 1966, the company sent Eddie to their sales and marketing school in Oklahoma and immediately following offered him a position as District Manager for New England. It was at this time that Eddie and Mary moved to Brewer to lay down roots and spend the next 63 years together.

In 1971, they welcomed a baby girl into their lives and built a vacation home in Plymouth, NH. When Phillips 66 decided to leave the east coast, Eddie made the decision to part ways and work as a General Manager for Norman E. Whitney in Brewer before he moved into bank liquidations. Eddie was a shrewd businessman and many people admired him for his vast knowledge and willingness to help just about anyone. He was a kind, generous man who loved his family, friends, cribbage and GOLF! Eddie traveled quite a bit during his years with his family and for work. He was blessed with the opportunity to play at many beautiful courses throughout the country. He enjoyed telling stories, sharing his experiences and he took great pleasure in kicking his brother-in-laws butt in cribbage. He never just let anyone win, not even his daughter who he loved more than life itself.

Eddie enjoyed volunteering for several organizations throughout his life such as the National Grange. He was a Disabled American Veterans Life Member and served as an Adjutant and Finance Officer for the American Legion Brewer Post 98 from 2018-2022.

Eddie is survived by his wife Mary D. Lachance of Brewer, Maine, his daughter Stephanie M. Lachance of Orrington, Maine, his sister-in-law Judy Duval of Jericho, VT, his niece Denise A. Duval of Somersworth, NH and his long-haired yellow grand kitty, Leo, who he loved hanging out with. Eddie is preceded in death by both of his parents.

Care for Eddie has been entrusted to the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith in Brewer, ME. A celebration of life may be announced at a later date. Those who wish to remember Eddie in a special way may make donations to the Maine Veterans’ Homes, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor., ME 04401.
