Edith Raymonde Lepelley, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.
Edith was born in France, in the small town of Chartres. As a young girl, she witnessed the invasion, occupation, and ultimately, the liberation of her beloved country. As a sixteen year old, residing in Normandy, she assisted US troops with directions.
She came to the United States in 1955, on a Fulbright scholarship to Lehigh University, where she studied English and literature. A career educator, she began teaching French at Penn State University.
Edith moved to Maine in 1965, to accept a position as Associate Professor at Southern Maine University. It was here that she met her lifelong and best friend, Ruth Waterhouse. Edith and Ruth travelled extensively, to all parts of the world, exploring their mutual love of history and the arts. Upon retirement, they lived in several locations in Maine, before settling in Bangor in 2008.
Edith had a deep affection for many things; reading, flowers, music, the ocean, and good conversation. She had a deep curiosity that drove a life of exploration and learning.
Her parents, two siblings, and a niece, as well as a treasured Aunt predeceased her. She is survived by several cousins and their siblings, all residing in France
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM, Monday, June 21, 2021, at the Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord, Holy Family Catholic Church, 429 Main Street, Old Town.
