South Portland – Edna Clark Smart, 90, of Corinth, Maine, passed away after a brief illness on February 18, 2023. Edna was born in Alton, ME on October 14, 1932, the daughter of Charles and Helen Clark. Edna attended Sebec Grammar School and graduated from Milo High School in the Class of 1950.
Following graduation, she married Ramon Smart in 1952 after his tour of duty in the Army. They moved from Milo to Windham where Edna spent most of her working life – Edna worked on an assembly line as well as doing specialty piecemeal work. She was also a near permanent fixture of the Maine Turnpike Authority as a toll collector.
Moving back to her roots, Edna and Ramon built their retirement home in Corinth in 1994, where she could be found working in her many flower gardens or mowing the lawn with her beloved John Deere tractor. She loved doing crafts and was an excellent seamstress. She took her talents and love of flowers and crafts to her volunteer work, where both Edna and Ramon volunteered at the Veterans Home and were members of the Bangor Nature Club. They enjoyed many special outings with many special friends. Perhaps surpassing her love of flowers and crafts was her love of animals. Over the years, Edna opened her heart and home to many dogs, cats, birds and one mischievous ferret.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her beloved husband of 53 years, Ramon Smart, sisters; Ella Clark, Shirley Fowles, Joan Clark and brother, David Clark. She is survived by her children; Sam Smart and wife Dee of Scarborough; Dr. Gary Smart and wife Diane of Portland, and Richard (Ricky) Smart and wife Margarite of Hollis Center; grandchildren; Caleb, Chris, Matt, Nathan, Ben, and Vincent and one great grandson, Declan. Edna is also survived by her brother, Stanley Clark of Corinth, sisters; Helen Lewis of Orono and sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Bill Hammond of Vernon, VT, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 11AM to 1PM, Saturday, March 4th, at the Brookings Smith Brewer Chapel, 55 S. Main Street, Brewer, ME. A small reception with refreshments will be served after the service at 18 Longwood Court, Orono, ME. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
