Edward Forrest Smith, 41, passed on to heaven in Tampa, Florida on October 10, 2019. Edward was born in Winterport, Maine on September 27, 1978, the son of William I. Smith of Winterport and Fort Myers, Florida and Catherine Ann (Lavin) Smith, deceased. He graduated from the Leroy H. Smith Elementary School in Winterport in 1992 and Hampden Academy in 1996 after which he enlisted in the U.S. Army, became an Airborne Ranger, then completed Special Forces Operations School and served as a combat medic on multiple tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Peru and Bulgaria. He graduated Special Forces Warrant Officer School in 2016. He was assigned to C company, 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Southern Florida. A highly decorated combat veteran, his awards and decorations include three Bronze Stars, one purple heart, three Army Commendation Medals, one with a V device for Valor, three additional Army Commendation Medals, one National Defense Service medal, three Non-commissioned Officer Professional Service Ribbons and many others. He is survived by his father, William I. Smith, step-mother, Geraldine B. Dodson-Smith, sisters: Mary C. Smith of Florida, Jean E. (Smith) Hutchinson, Jeffrey Hutchinson and their son Joseph Hutchinson of Singapore; Melanie H. Dodson of Florida and Erin (Dodson) West and Peter West and their daughters, Brooklyn E. West and Everly M. West of Virginia; aunts Margaret E. (Smith) Downs and Karen G. Coffman, both of Winterport. He also leaves behind many cousins, friends and brothers-in-arms.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 26, 2019, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 AM until the start of the service. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversations and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, following the service. Interment will follow the reception at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Winterport. This will be a full military funeral and all current and retired members of the military are encouraged to wear their service uniforms.
