Edward J Hughes Jr. MD, “Doc” passed away peacefully August 18, 2021 at his home with his family by his side.
He was born in Bangor on April 5, 1930, the son of Edward J and Arlene(Kane) Hughes, Sr.
He was a graduate of John Bapst High School, class of 1948, College of the Holy Cross, class of 1952, and the University of Ottawa Medical School, class of 1956.
After graduating, he enlisted as a Captain in the United States Air Force.
Dr. Hughes was a well-respected and dedicated pediatrician in the Bangor area, where he served as chief of pediatrics at St. Joseph Hospital.
Dr. Hughes and his wife, Barbara raised their family of ten in the “Big Pink House” on West Broadway and they enjoyed their summers at their camp on Lucerne.
He was an active and devoted member of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Johns Catholic Church in Bangor. Later in life, Dr. Hughes was an active volunteer of Catholic Charities in St. Petersburg, Florida. He traveled to the Vatican to receive one of the highest awards given by the Holy See, the Pro Ecclesia Et. Pontifice, this award was given by the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II to those persons whose lives reflect a singular dedication to the church and to one’s community.
After many years in Florida, Edward and Barbara moved back to Maine to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
After the death of his wife Barbara, he moved into a retirement community where he enjoyed entertaining the residents, playing the organ and singing for them.
In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by his son, Joseph; two brothers and one sister.
He is survived by four sons, Edward J Hughes III and Colleen; Stephen Hughes and Paula; Jeffrey Hughes and Margaret; and Christopher Hughes; five daughters; Suzanne and James Brooker; Patricia and Donald Lynch; Linda and Robert Murtaugh; Deborah and Scott Kenny; and Karen and Gregory Bailey; ten grandchildren; Erin, Alicia, Edward IV, Michael, Ryan, Kari, Adam, Brian, Colin, Lauren; and many great grandchildren; one brother; William Hughes and Connie; several nieces and nephews; special friends; Dr. Reg McManus; Father Fred Morse; Mike Young; and Eva Benson
The family wishes to thank Dr. Clifford Singer, Dr. David Koffmann, and Dana Cassidy, RN for their devotion to his care.
Relatives and friends may call 4-7pm, Thursday August 26 at the Family Reception Center of Brookings Smith, 163 Center St, Bangor. A Funeral Mass will be held 1 pm, Friday August 27, 2021 at St. Paul The Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, York St, Bangor, followed by a private Rite of Committal at Mt Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Ohio St, Bangor.
