Eileen M. Cox
Bangor
Eileen Cox passed away peacefully May 14, 2019. She was born May 24, 1922 in St. John New Brunswick, the daughter of Hazel Sheehan and Harold McNulty. Eileen attended St. John’s Catholic Grammar School and graduated from John Bapst High School in 1940. On May 4, 1943 Eileen married Bill Cox, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cox, Sr. in Florida, where Bill was serving in the U.S. Army.
Eileen spent many years volunteering for the organizations: St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, EMMC Hospital Auxiliary, Jay-Cee Wives and the Literacy Volunteer Reading Programs as well as helping her husband with his political career. In her later years she worked for Libby’s Card Shop. Then a job she truly loved, working with the elderly, at Eastern Area on aging, starting out as an outreach worker covering Bangor, Veazie and Hermon. She held a few different positions at the agency traveling many areas of the state. Eileen was a social security and insurance specialist and the coordinator for Maine Medicare Education Partnership. She trained volunteers to educate seniors on how to spot discrepancies on their medicare statements. Eileen worked for the Eastern Area on Aging for over 24 years, starting there at the age of 59.
Eileen and Bill enjoyed golf at the PVCC and traveling taking many trips to warmer places. She also loved playing bridge and her many trips to the coast with family and friends and especially loved her lobster along with many years of going to church suppers with friends.
Eileen was predeceased by her husband Bill, her parents Mr. and Mrs. McNulty, a sister Natalie Stimmell, her parents in law Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cox, Sr., her brothers in law Edward and Pauline Cox, John Cox, Lauren Cox, sisters -in-law Patricia and Donald McNally and Dorothy Cox.
Surviving are two sons Steven Cox of New York and Kerry and Deborah Cox of Bangor; grandchildren Patrick and Sarah Cox of New York, Kristy Cox of Brewer, Shawn and Kristen Cox of Orrington and Ryan Cox of Round Pond; great grandchildren Caroline and James Cox of New York, Logan and Noah Cox of Orrington, Hannah and Cullen Cox of Round Pond and Ella and Nikyla Bidler of Orrington; her brother Jon and Trudy McNulty of Portland, brothers-in-law Bill Stimmell and James Cox both of MA; sister-in-law Athena Cox Duddy of Bangor and many dear nieces and nephews. She had many dear friends who passed before her, Annette, Helen, Marguerite and Lillian and she leaves behind a dear friend who visited her often, Rena Anderson.
The family would like to thank the staff at Bangor Nursing and Rehab for providing the best possible care for Eileen and support to the family as well as to Beacon Hospice for their gentle care.
In keeping with Eileen’s wishes the family will celebrate her life with A Funeral Liturgy outside of Mass, 1 pm. Friday May 17, 2019 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, followed by the Rite of Committal at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Ohio St., Bangor.
