BREWER - Eleanor Rose (Coney) Campbell, 94, died peacefully November 21, 2024 at her home, with her loving family at her side. She was born in Bangor, Maine, on October 21, 1930, the daughter of S. Murray Coney and Bernadette (Rogan) Coney.
Eleanor grew up in Brewer and graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1948. She graduated with distinction from the University of Maine at Orono after just three years, in 1951. While at UMO, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and Phi Beta Kappa.
Eleanor taught English, and a variety of other classes, at Carmel High School from 1951 to 1955. She then taught English at Brewer High School from 1955 to 1960.
Eleanor was a loving and supportive stay-at-home mother while her children were growing up. After raising her two children, Eleanor returned to the University of Maine and received her Master’s Degree in Counseling in 1978. Eleanor then became a guidance counselor at John Bapst High school, where she worked for 25 years. Eleanor reluctantly retired from John Bapst in 2004 at the age of 74. She was a beloved and respected teacher and counselor and made many lifelong friends. Eleanor was always happy and proud to see her students do well.
Eleanor was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Brewer and St. Paul the Apostle Parish. She taught Sunday School classes for many years in Brewer. Eleanor was a woman of unwavering faith, shaping the spirituality of her family by her tireless Christian example.
Eleanor married her childhood sweetheart, Charles C. Campbell, in 1958. Eleanor and Charles were married for 60 years, until his death in 2019. They loved spending time with family at their camp at Phillips Lake in Dedham and their annual family trips to Florida. Eleanor always enjoyed being with her immediate and extended family, especially by the water and in the sun.
Eleanor maintained a gentle and caring demeanor that positively impacted all of the people around her. She was loved by all. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, affectionately known as “Nana," great-grandmother, sister, friend and will be missed by all of those fortunate enough to have known her.
Eleanor leaves behind her son, Honorable Gregory A. Campbell and wife, Margaret Towle Campbell, Esq. of Hampden; their three children, Katherine Campbell Davis, Esq., and husband Justin E. Davis IV, and their children, Justin and Caroline Rose; Gregory C. Campbell; and William F. Campbell, Esq; daughter, Marie B. Carolan and husband, Richard E. Carolan, of Wellesley, MA; their three children, Kristin Carolan Kaplan and husband, Brian Kaplan, and their children, Hayden, Carys, and River; Richard Carolan Jr. and wife, Kathleen Carolan, and their daughter, Mabel; and Aileen Carolan. Eleanor is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sondra Campbell, of Brewer, and her special friend and caregiver, Wendy “Birdy” Bertrand.
In addition to her parents, Eleanor was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Charles C. Campbell; her parents, and her sisters, Roberta Ann Coney of Brewer and Mary Jacqueline Williamson of Bangor.

Family and friends are welcome to call 4-7 p.m. Friday, December 6, 2024, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 7, 2024 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 531 North Main Street, Brewer. Following the funeral mass, a Rite of Committal will be held at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery on Ohio Street in Bangor. All are welcome to share conversation and refreshments in the Family Reception Rooms of the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main Street, Brewer.
