Elizabeth P. Siegel
BANGOR - Elizabeth P. Siegel died on January 18, 2014 of natural causes at age 96. She was born in June of 1917 in Patterson, New Jersey the daughter of Harry and Hilda Peckman. Elizabeth was married for 53 years to Albert A. Siegel of Brooklyn, New York. She was a graduate of East Stroudsburg State teachers College where she studied Education. After marrying and during the Second World War, she joined the war effort building airplanes for the Grumman Corporation. After the war, she and Albert settled in Garden City, New York where they raised two children; Robin and Jon. She returned to college in the 1960s, earning an MA in Secondary Education at Columbia University and taught English at the Garden City Junior High School. She was a long-time devotee of Hatha yoga, having begun the discipline in the early 1960s long before it was popular, as she would point out. After retiring she and Albert moved to La Jolla, California where she continued her yoga and formed a new coterie of friends. After Albert's death in 1993 she remained in California until the new millennium, at which time she relocated from sunny California to chilly Bangor (something else she would point out) and resided at Boyd Place and Hammond Street Senior Center until the time of her death. During the final years of her life she formed an entirely new social circle and leaves behind many wonderful friends in the Boyd Place community. Elizabeth is survived by her son Jon, daughter-in-law Joelle, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and her favorite dogs Emma and Lola. Asked several days before her death what she might like included in her obituary, she said simply "She came, she saw, she went." Elizabeth will be interred alongside Albert at the Veterans' Cemetery in Point Loma, California. No services are planned at this time. A service of Brookings-Smith 133 Center St. Bangor.
