GLENBURN, MAINE AND STAFFORD, VIRGINIA - Ellen Fay Martin, 73, lost her battle with Alzheimer's disease surrounded by the love of her family May 7, 2024, at her home in Stafford, Virginia. She was born August 17, 1950, in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of John and Arlene (Bean) Lewis.
Ellen was a graduate of Bangor High School, Class of 1968. She married her high school sweetheart, Douglas Martin. They celebrated 57 years of marriage in February. Although Ellen worked in education as a paraprofessional with Bangor City Public Schools and Virginia Beach City Public Schools, her favorite role was Grammie to her seven grandchildren.
Ellen delighted in crocheting, sewing, and knitting. Although she loved all wildflowers, her favorite was the lupine. She enjoyed lazy days with family and friends at the lake and Sunday breakfasts with the “Breakfast Gang”.
In addition to her parents, Ellen was predeceased by her daughter, Lori Sue, her sister, Joan, and her brother, Arlen. Surviving in addition to her husband, Douglas, of Old Town, are her children, Lori Lerner and her husband, Todd, of Stafford, Virginia, Kelly Schweers and her husband, Thomas, of Stafford, Virginia, and John Martin and his wife, Jaimie, of Portland, Maine; seven grandchildren who were everything to her, Claire Rose, Parker Douglas, Samuel, Jack, Ellie, Alex, and Kennedy; two sisters, Dian Bailey, of Newburgh, and Ann Baysdon, of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
Though she may have departed from our midst, Ellen’s legacy of love and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Rest peacefully, sweet Ellen.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, followed by the Rite of Committal in Kenduskeag Village Cemetery, Kenduskeag. All are welcome to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, following interment.
