Emile “Bib” Ouellette, 94, died peacefully on September 9, 2023, in Dover-Foxcroft at Mayo Regional Hospital. He is now reunited with his wife of 66 years, June (Conley) Ouellette who he married in 1946. Bib was born in Westbrook, Maine on November 25, 1928 to Arthemise (Audet) Ouellette. Bib and June lived in Gorham for many years, later moving to Solon and Glenburn. He spent his last 11 years living in Bishop Hill, Dexter with his cat. Although Bib was always a dog lover, it was Tiger who was his loyal companion during those last years.
Bib attended St. Hyacinth Parish schools until 7th grade when he determined that it was time to go to work. His first full time job, at the age of 14, was at the Navy Supply Pier in Portland, Maine. He began working at S.D.Warren Paper Company at 16, and stayed for 37 years. During that time, he always held second jobs, and he was a member of the U.S. Navy Seabees Reserves in South Portland for 8 years.
Always a builder, he started ‘Bib Ouellette Custom Homes’, constructing many houses in Gorham and surrounding areas. He also built his own boats, which he enjoyed on Sebago Lake with family and friends.
Bib and June enjoyed many years in Solon, establishing their camp in 1964 before a road existed on the western side of Ironbound Pond. They hosted many parties, dancing to music played by musician friends. Fun, laughter and music were always important to them, and they brought that joy with them in the 22 years spent in Seminole, Florida. Trips between Maine and Florida in their RV brought them to new places, such as Branson, Missouri and to the homes of U.S. presidents.
Bib initiated solutions when he saw a need, starting a Neighborhood Watch program, had a long involvement with the Board of Directors and brought a club house to life in their trailer park in Florida. He helped to bring electricity to the camps at Ironbound Pond, and served as the first Road Commissioner there.
Bib is survived by daughter, Suzanne (Ouellette) Chabot, and her husband, Roland; grandchildren: Jeffrey Chabot and wife Lisa, Gregory Chabot, Rosanne (Chabot) Rini, and husband Michael, Daniel Matson, Andrew Matson and wife Elizabeth, niece Carolyna Bradford and nephew Steven Conley. Great-grandchildren include Joseph Chabot, Sean Ryan; Emma Chabot, Benjamin Gardner; Anthony, Nicholas, Elizabeth, and Abigail Rini; Reid, Dayna and Paige Matson; Caleb and Elliot Matson. Family members will gather at a later date for a private service at St. Hyacinth’s cemetery in Westbrook, per Bib’s wishes. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
