Ernest “Ernie” Harriman Boynton, 84, passed away on December 27, at his home in Hampden. He was born on April 18, 1931 in Long Branch, N. J., the son of Ernest Hinsdale and Alta (Reason) Boynton.
After graduating high school Ernie enlisted in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean conflict, serving at bases in the south and Alaska. Ernie married his high school sweetheart, Florence (Hiller), in Fairbanks, Alaska - they were married for 30 years and had four children, John, Debbie, David, and Beth. After his honorable discharge he attended California State Poly Tech College. He returned to the east coast and worked in the fuel oil, heating and air conditioning business, retiring in a management role. He also worked in the securities business specializing in mutual funds and the OTC market. In 1971 he and his family moved to Maine. He joined Webber Oil Company and was transferred to, Chase & Kimball Oil Co. in Dover-Foxcroft, as manager of operations. He was later transferred back to Bangor as the manager of Webber's Retail Heating Oil Dept. In 1985, Ernie said good bye to his wife Florence who passed away after a short battle of lung cancer.
His volunteer work included being a Scout Master, a member of the Order of The Arrow, a member of Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club, town councilman, active member of the Bangor Chapter of Ducks Unlimited for over 40 years and a member of the Veteran Artisan And Crafts Gallery that promoted veteran artisans and the work of disabled veterans. Ernie was a life member of the Hermon Skeet and Trap Club. With the help of many of his friends he started the Bangor Chapter of Ducks Unlimited in 1971. Later he served as the D U State Chairman for three years. Ernie also belonged to a group of close friends who gathered to play poker every month for well over 30 years.
Ernie met Sandra (Clark) and married in June of 1989. Sandra and Ernie shared countless hours fishing out of their camp at Jones Pond on Gouldsboro Peninsula, as did many of their friends. Most of Ernie's best friends were fishermen and duck hunters. Ernie enjoyed training and working with Labrador retrievers all his life. One of Ernie's favorite pastimes was the annual gathering, with close friends, at duck camps in Gouldsboro, Duck Flat Manor, and in Milbridge over many duck seasons. Those traditions lasted for well over 40 years. Ernie was an avid fly fisherman and fly tier. As an aspiring artist he produced countless paintings in oil and watercolors well into his 80s.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra, of Hampden. Ernie's children: Deborah Ash and husband Greg of Ft. Myers, Florida; David, of Mexico, Maine, and Beth Wright and husband Michael of Pine Island, Florida. Daughter-in-law, Cindy, of Greenville. Grandchildren, Jason Thompson, Norita and Jonathan Boynton and Sarah Boynton. Step-children: Carolyn Crosby and her husband, Mark, of Northport, James Carson and his wife, Karen of Maxfield. Step-grandchildren: Fletcher Carson and his wife Heather of Oceanside, California, Camden and Caelyn of Northport, Sophia, Abigail and Rebecca of Maxfield. Step-great-grandchild: Ocean James Carson. Sister-in-law Pauline Levesque and husband William (Butch) Levesque. Ernie was predeceased by his wife, Florence Hiller Boynton, and his oldest son John Boynton.
Ernie and Sandra are indebted to many family and friends especially Hospice of Eastern Maine (Tricia, David, Dolly, Erin, Heather, Debbie and Colleen), George and Jan Currier, Nancy Pfrommer and many more special people.
There will be a memorial service at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor on April 30, 2016. The memorial service is being held in April as all of Ernie's children, grand-children and fellow fishermen, duck hunters, Webber Oil Employees and poker pals will be back in Maine.
