DIXMONT - Ethel L. (Preble) Shedd, 81, passed peacefully October 27, 2019, at home, after an illness. Ethel was born February 27, 1938 in Brewer to Louise A. (Rowe) Preble and D. Kenneth Preble. Ethel graduated from Brewer High School in 1956 then attended Husson College. She met Galen in 1962 while he was stationed at Dow AFB. After a whirlwind romance, they were married in June 1962. One year later, Suzanne Victoria was born. They traveled with the military for many years until settling in 1975 in Dixmont. Ethel began her career in the insurance industry in 1977, retiring from the Dunlap Agency in 1997 to pursue her interest in antiques and started her own business, Hummingbird Hill Antiques. She enjoyed her retirement years antiquing and creating beautiful quilts for family and friends. Ethel was a very talented quilter, each one a work of art. She was a member of the Scrap Baggers Quilting Club for many years and loved getting together with the ladies to quilt, eat, and chat. Ethel loved living in the country, taking walks in the woods with the dogs, Suzanne, and her grandsons, Zach and Jamie when they were young. She loved watching the birds every morning while she and Galen ate breakfast and planned their day. She also enjoyed spending time with Galen Upta camp at East Grand Lake with their Lake friends during the warmer months. She left the winters and ice fishing to Galen and the dog. She preferred to stay home and work on her many quilting projects and meet her sister, Ruth Doyon, and her dear friend, Rosalie Wiggins, at Frank’s Bakery for coffee. Ethel is survived by her husband of 57 years, Galen; her daughter, Suzanne Fougere of Hampden; grandson, Zachary R. Landry of Gardner, Massachusetts; grandson, Jamison G. Fougere, of Hampden; her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth A. and Arnold Doyon of Milford; a very special cousin, Shirley Ellis of Old Town; a very special niece and her family, Robin, David, Cassidy, and Carly Climo of Bradley; sister-in-law, Janet Moulen of Rye, NH; brother-in-law & wife, Alton & Mary Shedd of Lincoln and Zephyr Hills, Florida; brother-in-law & wife, Derward & Betty Shedd of Millinocket; several cousins; numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nephews & nieces. Ethel loved cats and dogs, owning many over the years which were considered family members. She will be missed by her kitty, Joey, and her latest dog, Trooper. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401 (www.bangorhumane.org).
