Ethel Oakes

March 7, 1939 — June 8, 2022

ORRINGTON - Ethel M. Oakes, 83, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, June 8, 2022 at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 7, 1939 in Orrington, the daughter of Francis and Marion (Adams) Grover.

Ethel attended Orrington and Brewer Schools as well as Beal College in Bangor. On June 27th, 1956, she married Lawrence O. Oakes and they raised four children in Orrington. Ethel was a loving, dedicated mother and was considered the neighborhood mom. She would often bake large batches of cookies and whoopie pies for her family and the neighborhood kids to enjoy. A talented seamstress, she sewed everything from dolls clothes to Halloween costumes to party dresses. She also loved to knit and crochet, making many mittens, hats, doilies, afghans, and dish cloths for family and friends. In addition to this “domestic” side, she was often pressed into service as a carpenter, mechanic, family accountant, teacher and mentor. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was also an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and made the best relish on the planet.

Surviving, are her children, Lawrence O. Oakes Jr., of Eddington, Teresa and her husband, Ian Willoughby, of London, England, Owen and his wife, Tracy, of Orono, Kimberly Petry and her husband, Jonathan, of Hermon; six grandchildren, Kristen Harvey and her husband, Thomas, of Westbrook, Bradley Oakes, of Bangor, Sarah Willoughby, of London, England, Megan Clark and her husband, Jamie, of London, England, Connor and Ryan Petry, of Hermon; as well as four great- grandchildren, Andrew and Judith Harvey, of Westbrook, and Peter and Evelyn Clark, of London, England. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence, on December 26, 2021.

The family would like to thank the staff at Northern Light EMMC for their care and compassion.
