Eugene L Arsenault passed away peacefully on November 8th, 2024; born on October 30th, 1934, in Portland, Maine. He was a strong supporter of Hampden’s athletic programs where he enjoyed watching student athletes compete. Eugene was a proud Hampden, Maine resident for over 75 years and is where he excelled as a scholar athlete, most notably for his accomplishments on the gridiron as a fullback while attending Hampden Academy.
Eugene went on to briefly attend the University of Maine at Orono where he studied physical education and played for their freshmen football team before being drafted by the U.S. Armed Services where he spent considerable time stationed in Europe until he was “Honorably” discharged on June 27th, 1961. On May 18th, 1965, he received a certificate of completing an Automatic Sprinkler Apprenticeship Training program from “THE Pennsylvania State University,” which culminated into a 30- year career in the Automatic Sprinkler/Pipefitter trades. A couple of cherished awards that he received included the following: In 1993, received the “Football Player of the 1950’s,” decade award from the Hampden Academy Bronco Boosters Club. In 2021, he was inducted into Hampden Academy’s Athletic Hall of Fame, inaugural, class.
Among other interests in the out of doors, Eugene especially enjoyed his time brook fishing for brook trout and hunting the elusive white-tailed deer. He enjoyed many memorable days at his Swan Lake camp with family relatives and friends along with playing some competitive games of horseshoes at the Swan Lake camps of the Newcomb’s, Hamilton’s, Smith’s or Nason’s. An opportunity to get on the dance floor with his beloved wife, Roberta, to do the “Jitterbug” was never passed upon. Being a devoted fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and the Boston Red Sox, conversations regarding their respective performances were always a topic for discussion.
In 1965, Eugene was one of twelve founding members who helped establish the “Wildes Hill Rod & Gun Club” in Monroe, Maine. He was proud to have partnered the establishment of Hampden Academy’s Bronco Boosters Club back in the 1980’s. He treasured his trip to Las Vegas with his wife, Roberta, and family as well as an Alaskan Cruise with family and dear friend, Frances Bowen.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Roberta Arsenault; son, Donald Arsenault; father, Leo Arsenault; mother, Margaret Emery; stepfather, Charles Emery; three brothers, Leo Arsenault, Jr., Frederick Arsenault, and Martin Arsenault, and dear loving friend and companion of the last 17 years, Frances Bowen.
