Hampden - Eugene (Gene) L. Richardson, 71, passed away at home surrounded by family on Friday, April 29, 2016 after losing a hard fought battle against cancer. Born in Dover, ME on November 23, 1944, son of Louise (Savage / Richardson) Mulherin and George A. Richardson. Gene grew up in Milo, ME class of ’63. Gene loved to play basketball and shoot pool with his friends.
He worked at many jobs in Bangor while putting himself through school at Husson College, from which he graduated with a degree in business in 1968. He married his high school sweetheart that same summer and was then drafted into the Army where he served as a cryptographer while stationed in Turkey. After his tour-of-duty, Gene returned home and went to work for NCR as a salesman. Gene then co-created a computer business named Economy Systems which later became Advanced Data Systems. He employed many people and his motto was “If I am going to do well in business, then my employees are too.” Most of his employees felt that Gene was a fair, fun and kind employer and he enjoyed the comradery that came with working closely with his employees. He later sold ADS to Tyler Technologies. Gene had a passion for flying his own plane and later started a general aviation business, Maine Aero Services.
Gene is survived by his loving wife Laurel, his son Paul and daughter-in-law Stephanie, his daughter Michele, mother to his beloved grandsons Brock and Brody, his Sister Patricia and brother-in-law Robert, Brother George, special Auntie Helen, step-mother Honorene Richardson, and many other extended family who will deeply miss him. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday May 7, 2016, at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor with Pastor Bruce Cummings, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith 163 Center St., Bangor immediately following the service.
