Hampden, & Stockholm, ME.-Evelyn A. Clisham, 98, entered the Spirit World November 23, 2024. She was born in Stockholm, a daughter of Christina and Carlton Anderson. Evelyn graduated from Caribou High School and Gorham State Teachers College, now known as the University of Southern Maine, in 1950. Evelyn taught in Stockholm from 1945 to 1947. She moved to Bangor to teach fifth grade at Abraham Lincoln School. Her most well known student was former Senator and Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, whose career she always followed.
Evelyn met her future husband, James J. Clisham, through a blind date arranged by James’ sister. Evelyn and James were both interested in agriculture as Evelyn’s family were farmers and James loved animals, especially horses and cows. They were married November 17, 1951 at the Stockholm Baptist Church.
Evelyn taught third grade in Hampden for 25 years, retiring in 1985. She successfully made a new life for herself after Jim’s passing on December 13, 1989. She was a long time volunteer at the Hampden Historical Society and did extensive work in the archives at First Baptist Church in Bangor.
Evelyn enjoyed senior swim and her many friends at the Lura Hoyt Pool. She said time spent at the pool were some of her happiest memories. She truly loved the town of Hampden and her citizens.
On August 24, 2022 Evelyn was presented with The Kinsley House Cane for being the eldest known resident in Hampden, by James Husson, President of the Hampden Historical Society.
Evelyn was predeceased by her brothers (all Anderson), Harold of Stockholm, Winfred of Cocoa Beach, FL., Perley of Zephyrhills, FL., Mallet "Andy" of Pittsburgh, NH and Kennenth of Anchorage, AK and her sisters Signe Olivenbaum of New Sweden, ME, Hazel Brunelle of Worcester, MA, Bernice Hedman of Titusville, FL., Inez McNabb of Mt. Dora, FL, Sylvia Nylund of Allentown, PA, Warrena Anderson of Stockholm. In addition to many in-laws in Northern Maine and out of state, Evelyn was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Mary Agnes Clisham of Bangor, two brothers-in-law and their wives, John and Dorothy (Babcock) Clisham and William J. and Faye (Flye) Clisham, RN, all of Hampden. She was preceased by an infant daughter, Connie Marie, in 1956.
Evelyn is survived by her son James R. (“Bob”) Clisham of Portland, ME, daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth L. (“Betty”) and Glenn W. Simpson of Hermon, ME, grandson, Wyman G Simpson of Phoenix, AZ, many nieces and nephews and friends.

Donations to the Stockholm Society will be used in the Educational field to honor Evelyn's years of teaching and donations to the Hampden Historical Society will be used for the Hannibal Hamlin Law Office. A Celebration of Life for Evelyn will be held Friday, May 16, 2025, at the Hampden Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave, Hampden. SERVICE AT 1:00 pm, visiting at 12 noon.
