Frances Godfrey, 95, died peacefully at home in Bangor, on October 2, 2016. She was born April 19, 1921, in Bangor, the daughter of Harold R. and Alice (Pierce) Edwards. She was the granddaughter of Isaiah Mayo Pierce who was the founder and owner of the I.M.Pierce Land Company, a leading timberland company in Maine.
Frances grew up in Bangor and attended Bangor grade schools. She graduated in 1938 from the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass, and from Smith College in 1942. She returned to Bangor and worked in the Trust Department of what was then the Eastern Trust and Banking Company. She married Prentiss Godfrey of Bangor, in 1944. As a newly married couple, they first lived in Cambridge, Mass where Prentiss worked as a lawyer for the Army Corps of Engineers after the war. They returned to Bangor prior to their first child being born in 1946, and at that time, Mr. Godfrey set up his law practice.
Frances’s early volunteer work included work for the Army Air Force in what was called the “Filter Center”- tracking planes flying into, over, and out of Maine. She also volunteered for the Red Cross. Frances was a member of All Souls Church, the Shakespeare Club, the D.A.R., the Bangor Historical Society, a member of the Board of Managers of the Bangor Children’s Home, a sustaining member of the Bangor Junior League, and a member of Chapter A, P.E.O.
Frances spent many happy summers as a child, and eventually with her own children, at the family cottage on Cold Stream Pond in Enfield. In Bangor, she played bridge once a week for 40 plus years with the same group of close women friends: Peg Lovejoy, Louise Moody and Helen-Marie Allen. She enjoyed painting and traveled to many places on the Maine Coast with her painting class. She knit beautifully, and creatively, and often designed her own patterns. She did a tremendous amount of genealogical research and chronicled a great deal of both her own family history as well as that of her husband’s family-both old New England families who arrived in this country in the 1600’s. She has documented many of their stories, archived photos and manuscripts, and collected antiques and memorabilia from their lives. Her work has been valuable to numerous New England historical societies.
Frances is survived by her five children, 15 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. She was married to her husband, Prentiss, for 67 years. He died in 2011.
Her survivors include: three sons, John E. Godfrey of Beverly, Mass, David P. Godfrey of Southport, and Donald of Yarmouth; two daughters, Ann (Godfrey) Macdonald of Cambridge, Mass, and Alice (Godfrey) Eyles of Hampden.
Frances will be remembered as a lady of grace, dignity, quiet determination, and strong character. She was devoted to her family, and she will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the reception hall of the church, following the service.
