Francis Sibley, 94, died September 7, 2015 at a Bangor hospital. Born August 12, 1921 on the Shin Pond Road, Patten, Maine to Frank and Sarah (Reed) Sibley.
At age 2 ½ his family moved to Bangor where he grew up as the middle boy of five sons.
He attended Mary Snow School until the age of nine when his mother died and he and a brother went to the Good Will School in Hinckley, where they remained for several years until they moved to Vanceboro to live with their father.
On December 12, 1939, he joined the U.S Army where his service consisted of the 18th Combat Engineers, a guard at the U.S. Army Disciplinary Barracks in Kansas, and the Pacific Theater-New Guinea and Southern Philippines.
He worked at the Eastern Corporation/Standard Packaging in both Brewer and Lincoln from 1946 until retirement in 1982 when he returned to Veazie.
With a special interest in sports, he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in school sports and he even mowed a field near his home so all the neighborhood children could play ball.
Gardening was a favorite pastime in summer, when he grew special corn, raspberries, and glads, among other crops.
He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Hathaway) Sibley.
Surviving are his children, Lee Sibley of Wilmington, DE., Glenice Sibley of Veazie, Keith Sibley of Kennebunk, and Julia Epperson of Acton, MA.; grandchildren, Calvin Sibley of Orlando, FL., Stephen Sibley of Germantown, MD., Christopher and Jarod Sibley, both of Howell, Michigan, Lila and Georgia Epperson both of Acton, MA.; great grandchildren, Arius and Leo Sibley; brothers, Robert Sibley of Carmel, Galen Sibley of Bangor, Loren Sibley of Bristol; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Susan Garland of Bangor.
A graveside service with military honors will be held 1 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2015 at Fairview Cemetery, Veazie. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor following the service.
