Levant - Galen N. Call, 92, passed away November 5, 2023, at a Bangor hospital. He was born September 10, 1931, in Bangor, the son of Harold L. and Pauline M. (Shapleigh) Call.
Galen was the only one of his many siblings that graduated with a high school diploma. He was very proud of this accomplishment.
Galen served in the Army from September 4, 1952, to August 21, 1954, a veteran of the Korean War, with the 1660 55th Ordinance Ammunition Company as a vehicle mechanic in Kentucky. He received the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
After his military service, Galen worked as a truck driver with Fox & Ginn for 25 years. When he finished there, he worked as a truck driver with St. Johnsbury until he retired in 1984. Galen decided that retired life was not for him, so he helped his son Kevin with establishing Call Construction in 1994. They worked together doing groundwork for 17 years before he finally retired.
On April 14, 1956, Galen married Edna L. Thayer, and celebrated 49 years before she passed away in 2005. Galen was a member of the Maine State Truck and Tractor Pullers Association for many years. He loved that he was able to pull his Minneapolis Molines with Gene and Kevin. Galen would follow his grandchildren, Kevin Jr., Neil, and Natasha to many of the fairs to see them pull the same tractors. He loved playing cribbage with his family every Saturday and Sunday morning. The tradition has been ongoing for the past 25 years. Galen's quick wit would keep Kevin Curry on his toes. We all had many laughs listening to the banter across the table. Galen and his son, Gene spent numerous garage hours together fully restoring about 30 Minneapolis Moline tractors since 1983 to current. He had an affinity for the black and white strip series.
In Masonry, Galen was a member of the Olive Branch Lodge #124 A.F. & A.M., of Charleston, since 2012. He was also a member of Anah Shriners since 2013, and a member of the 76ers Hungry Hollow Snowmobile Club in Levant for many years. He was one of the founding fathers of the club in 1976.
In addition to his parents and wife, Edna, Galen was predeceased by his grandsons, Kevin S. Call Jr. and Christopher Stevens; great-granddaughter, Sophia L. Hebert-Call; and siblings, Robert H. Call, Harold L. Call, Kenneth L. Call, Norman Call, Geneva E. (Call) Seavey, Lorraine A. (Call) Lynn, Gerald R. Call, and Charles L. Call. He is survived by his daughter, Louise Call of Old Town; sons, Steve Call and his wife, Dawn (Giddings), of Levant, Gene Call and his wife, Lori (Grondin), of Levant, and Kevin Call and his wife, Tammie (Roberts), of Levant; grandsons, Ryan Call and Neil Call of Levant; granddaughters, Megan (Call) Dube and her husband, Taylor, great-grandchildren, Dominic, James, and Lucas of Hermon, and Natasha (Call) Dunham and her husband, Steve, of Levant; special family members, Kevin and Teresa Curry of Levant; and special friend, Reta Shaw of Levant.
