Galen H. Shedd passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with his dog by his side after an illness on December 6, 2024 at the age of 90. He was born Friday the 13th of April 1934 in Mattawamkeag, the son of Howard E. and Laura M. (Tilton) Shedd.
Galen graduated high school in Mattawamkeag, Class of 1953. In 1955, he enlisted in the United States Air Force with his two younger brothers, Derward and Alton. He enjoyed traveling while serving his country and making long standing friends. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener, and all around fix it guy as well as a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan. Galen made friends everywhere he lived during his Air Force career and beyond. He has many friends and acquaintances who will remember him fondly.
Galen met his beloved Ethel in 1962 and they were married in June of the same year after a short courtship. After being stationed in several places, he and Ethel settled in Dixmont in 1975 with their daughter, Suzanne.
Galen enjoyed a 24 year career in the Air Force retiring in 1978.
Galen is survived by his daughter, Suzanne (Shedd) Fougere, grandsons, Zachary Landry and Jamison Fougere, his sister Janet Moulen of Rye, NH, brother Derward Shedd, wife Betty, and brother Alton Shedd, wife Mary, sister-in-law, Ruth Doyon (husband, Arnie) special niece, Kathy Shedd, and niece Robin Climo and family. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and dear friends.
Galen was predeceased by his wife, Ethel, in 2019. They had a long happy marriage of 57 years. They spent many days together with their Camp Family at East Grand Lake, time which Galen treasured.
Family and friends are welcome to call 11 am to 1 pm, Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. The funeral service will be held immediately following at 1pm.
The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street in Bangor, following the service.
