Gayle Carson Bates Boone
Bangor-Houlton
Gayle Boone died at EMMC January 22 of viral pneumonia as ‘the last straw’ complicating a long struggle with several chronic illnesses. She was born September 19, 1940 in Houlton, the only child of J. Merland and Viva (Little) Carson. Misfortune struck early with the death of her mother when Gayle was eight years old. The rest of her life was blessed with her adoption by Merland’s second wife, Freda, shortly after.
Gayle married Roger Bates of Houlton in 1959. They farmed potatoes in near-by Linneus and raised two children, Michael and Marcia. Misfortune struck again when Roger died suddenly at age 36 in 1973. Gayle took over the farm for the next few years, during which Michael was found to have leukemia, from which he died in 1976.
It was during this time that Gayle met Dr. Alan Boone, a medical oncologist in Bangor. To quote Alan’s mother “They met under tragic circumstances.” Alan had been divorced in 1979. Gayle and Alan married in 1981, and happily blended a family, including Marcia and Alan’s two sons Storer and Jacob.
Gayle enjoyed horses, dogs and cats, and was active in the local Pony Club, making several life-long friends. Operating a farm, raising two children and losing one , somehow left some time to do some substitute teaching.
Gayle and Alan loved their family camp at Shin Pond, hiking and canoeing, flying their (1960) Cessna 172, on floats in the warmer months. Their flying was mainly in the NE, but ranged as far as northern Labrador, the Bahamas, and Montana. They also enjoyed travel to many foreign lands in groups and as just the two of them.
Gayle was a loving person who valued family highly. She yet found time to serve on the Board of the King’s Daughters’ Home, for many years and as President for two. She also volunteered at EMMC for years, and on the altar guild at St. John’s Episcopal Church endlessly.
The family is grateful for the excellent and compassionate care she received at EMMC and at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor, both fine institutions.
Gayle is survived by her husband Alan, daughter Marcia and husband Dean, brother-in law Gary and wife Alice, stepsons Storer (Renee) and Jacob (Laura), a special niece Kail (‘Wake’) Cadman and their four sons and families, grandchildren Hannah ( Patrick), and Storer’s five children: Caitlin, Anna, Lydia, Theodore and Clara.
There will be no funeral, at her request, but there will be a gathering at her home for family and friends soon at a date to be announced.
A brief graveside committal service will be held in the spring at the family lot in Presque Isle.
In lieu of flowers the King’s Daughters’ Home would appreciate a donation in her memory, 89 Ohio St., Bangor, ME. 04401.
