BAR HARBOR - Genevieve DiMatteo Minutolo, 98, died peacefully at home on December 29, 2014.
She was born on October 3, 1916 in Manhattan New York, the older of two daughters born to Albert DiMatteo and Antoinette DiMatteo. Although life brought her eventually to Maine and Florida, she always had a soft spot in her heart for the city of her birth.
Genevieve graduated from high school in 1933, and went on to college in Manhattan, where she studied teaching. In her twenties she fell in love with her childhood friend Francis Paul Minutolo, better known as "Chick", and they were married in 1940. They had three children, who fondly remember spending a great deal of time with their mother at Jones' Beach on Long Island, her "summer residence." After Chick died in 1968, Genevieve moved up to Maine to be near her daughter and her husband. She worked for many years as front desk manager at the Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor, and spent winters doing the same thing at the Belview Biltmore in Clearwater, Florida. She also worked for several years at the gift shop of the Bar Harbor Inn.
Genevieve loved life, loved God, and loved people. She loved to drive, loved to talk, loved to shop, and did them all in an accelerated manner. She never married again; her family, her children and grandchildren, became the focus of her world. Her lively spirit and healthy sense of humor kept her going strong for many years beyond the age that most people settle quietly into the end of their lives. As one family member said, "Genevieve was always a force to be reckoned with".
Genevieve is survived by her three children: Antoinette McKay of Bar Harbor, Albert Minutolo of Bar Harbor, and Joseph Minutolo, also of Bar Harbor. She has three grandsons, Frank McKay of Bar Harbor, Ben McKay of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and Joey Minutolo of Bar Harbor; two granddaughters, Serena Minutolo of Bar Harbor and Caitlin Murphy of Ames, Iowa; and one great grandson, Ronin McKay of Kill Devil Hills North Carolina.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, 11 AM, Friday, January 9, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 21 Ledgelawn Avenue, Bar Harbor, with Rev. John Skehan, presiding. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at Mama DiMatteo's Restaurant, following the service.
