Orono - George Francis Bagley Jr., died at home after a brief illness on January 17, 2018. He was born April 11, 1944, in Orono, to George Francis Sr. and Pauline Frances Bagley.
George owned and operated Bagley’s Greenhouse for 17 years which is now run by his daughter, Katherine Bagley. He spent countless hours teaching his customers how to care for their plants and enjoyed sharing many tips and tricks. George took great pride in offering unique varieties of plants that were not typically found in other greenhouses. George had many passions, he was a woodsman, hunter, carpenter, furniture maker and local celebrity pyrotechnician. As a breeder and trainer of Gordon Setters, he was recently recognized in The Maine Sportsman as one of the few breeders in the country. His belief was “You’re probably the one that needs training”. George served in the Army as a helicopter mechanic earning his Parachute Badge, the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. George believed that knowledge was not gained in school but through life experiences.
George is survived by his brother, Bruce; children, Rosann, Maria, John, Pauline and Katherine; grandchildren, Justin, Nicole, Morgan, Jacey, Tanner, Sophia, and Kayla and 7 great-grandchildren, plus a large local community of family and friends. George is preceded in death by his parents, George Sr. and Pauline, brother, David and grandson, Cameron. His family is grateful for their time spent with him in the outdoors; camping, fishing, shooting and enjoying the woods. He spent many years as a Boy Scout Troop leader contributing to his community, as it was important to him to pass on these skills.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5 to 7pm Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the Orono Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 72 Main Street, Orono. Condolences to the family can be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
