George Doughty

August 9, 1936 — July 5, 2019

BANGOR – George Louis Doughty, Jr., 82, passed away on July 5, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 9, 1936, the son of George Louis, Sr. and Marion (Brown) Doughty.
George graduated from Bangor High School in the class of 1954. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy for four years. George was also a loyal employee for almost 40 years at the Bangor Daily News. A life-long Red Sox fan, George’s fervent wish he would say was to play short-stop for the Red Sox when he grew up. He was also a life-long attendant of almost every Bangor High School sporting event. Passing on his love for baseball, he coached his son, George’s little league baseball team. Through his continued involvement in his children’s activities; he became a mentor and role model for many young people who looked up to him. He enjoyed the outdoors a well as hunting and fishing. Some of his favorite times were spent at hunting camp up in Milo with his buddies.
Above all, George was a devoted family man, and an excellent story teller. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Sandra, and when his father passed away he helped to take care of his mother every single day, as he had promised his father. He particularly enjoyed sharing stories of his childhood adventures with his brother, Jim. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren for his “Internationally World Famous Pencil Dive” which he claimed to receive a perfect score from the Russian judge. George may have entered many rooms full of strangers, but by the time he left he would know everyone who was there. He was always quick with a joke, and loved unconditionally.
George is survived by his loving wife of almost 59 years, Sandra (Young) Doughty; his daughter, Melissa Rice and her husband, Chris of Waterville, ME; sons, George Louis Doughty III and his wife, Sharon Musall of Monticello, IN, and William Joseph Doughty and his wife, Erin (Chamberlain) of Warwick, RI. His other surviving family members include, brother and best friend, James F. Doughty and wife, Susan (Bell); brother-in-law, David Cole; sister-in-law, Elinor (West) Doughty; grandchildren, Nicholas Rice; Megan Rice; Liam Doughty; Kaila Moore; and Sam Moore; great-grandchild, Noah Rice; and many nieces and nephews.
