George Albert Fulcher, 101, passed away peacefully September 26, 2020, three weeks shy of his 102nd birthday. He was born in Toronto, Canada, October 16, 1918 the son of James and Alice (Michel) Fulcher.
He served in the US Army Air Corp, which became the US Air Force, serving 20 years, through WW II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. George was a ball turret gunner assigned to the 94th, 91st and 341st bomber squadrons and flew into combat 73 times on missions in Germany, England and North Africa. To make it into the “Lucky Bastards Club” a WW II B-17 bomber crew member had to fly 25 times into combat and return.
After his military career, he became employed at the University of Maine, retiring after 20 years.
George was a hard worker at one time holding down four jobs.
He enjoyed listening to his music and playing the organ. George enjoyed planting his flower bulbs and tending to his gardens and he adored his animals especially his dog, Ginger.
Surviving are three children, Roger Fulcher and his wife, Robin, Bonnie Sloan and her husband, Bill, and Doris Jordan and her husband, Randy; grandchildren, Tennille LeBreton, Matthew Sloan, Justin Fulcher, Brandie Free, David Sloan and Jamie Sloan; several great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
George was predeceased by his wife, Loretta Fulcher and an infant daughter, Eileen Grace Fulcher.
George lived up to his famous statement, “he died of shortness of breath.”
Relatives and friends are invited to call 5 pm. to 7 pm. Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A graveside service with military honors, will be held 11 am Friday, October 2, 2020 at Woodlawn Cemetery, North Main St., Brewer, and pastor Eric Mitchell, officiating.
