George W. Landry, Jr.
Brewer-Hampden
George W. Landry, Jr. passed away peacefully at home in Hampden, surrounded by his loved ones on June 25, 2021. He was born on June 29, 1927, to Ruth and George Landry Sr.
He graduated Brewer High School and proudly joined the Navy at age 17 to serve in WWII, helping to liberate the Philippines. When his father passed, he was honorably discharged and came home to help his mother run the family business, Landry’s Appliances. Motivated by the combination of integrity and respect for the Navy, George joined the Naval Reserves, spending one weekend each month and a two week block each year over his 30-year commitment. He enjoyed serving his country and was thankful for the many years of learning new skills, adventure and extensive travel.
George met the love of his life, Barbara (Jean) Landry, while delivering appliances to her grandparents. Her grandfather told George that she made a “mean” spaghetti dinner and he should come back soon to decide for himself. George fell in love with the spaghetti and Jean. They were married on June 18, 1955.
George ran the family business, Landry’s Appliance after his mother passed and sold appliances to multi-generational families before retiring in 1997. However, he didn’t stay retired for long, for he was recruited by many businesses and chose a position at newly opened Filene’s selling shoes, which he enjoyed. But it wasn’t the same as appliances. When Home Depot came to town, the recruiters came “a-calling” and George followed his heart, expertly selling appliances until he “officially” retired in 2018! He was constantly winning awards for best sales in the state and always receiving letters of praise from customers calling him “an exceptional employee” and “a true expert in appliances”. George was a “people person”. He was warm, outgoing and genuinely interested in helping others. To this day, he can’t go anywhere without people recognizing him, many thanking him for selling an appliance that lasted for decades.
George was an avid reader, often reading 2-3 books at a time. He loved all sports, but especially his beloved Red Sox. He will be dearly missed by his sweet dog, Benny. You could always find George walking Benny several times a day. He loved these walks and the ability to catch up with his cherished, friendly neighbors at Avalon Village. He will be missed by many for his kind heart, genuine love for people and always cheerful disposition.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara “Jean” Landry of Hampden; his son, David Landry/wife Delores of Hampden; daughter Stephanie Drinan/husband Michael of Cape Elizabeth; and beloved grandchildren Marc, Laura, Mary and Jack. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Spellman of Brewer and brother Paul Landry and Roz of Damariscotta.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the many nurses and helpers associated with Northern Lights Hospice. Their extraordinary empathy and kindness were a great blessing.
