George F. McLeod
Brewer
George McLeod, 95, passed away at 12:35 a.m. on October 1, 2023, at his residence, the Ellen Leach Home, in Brewer. His daughter, Davia Knowlton, was at his side. He was born April 11, 1928, at his parent’s home in East Hampden. George was the son of John T. and Madeline (Bridge) McLeod.
Because George grew up during the The Great Depression, he was always looking for odd jobs even as a child. When the circus came to town, he would hang around asking for any task to earn a bit of money. Because they lived near the railroad tracks, the McLeod boys would prowl around empty freight cars looking for anything of value.
George held various jobs over the years including one with Grant’s Dairy. When the milk truck he was driving ran over him, the headlines read “Freak Accident. Man Runs Over Himself.” Fortunately, he had met a beautiful lady named Paula when he delivered ice cream mix to her at the ice cream shop where she worked. She saw the headlines and went to the hospital to visit. He was smitten and eventually they married. He retired from the City of Bangor Motor Pool where he worked nights and enjoyed spending time with Bangor police officers. After that, he worked at the Shrine Hall in Bangor making sure everything was spotless and earned the title “Mr. Clean.” At the same time, George completed farrier training at the University of Maine. He was an extremely successful blacksmith and farrier for over 36 years. George, who became known as “The Horse Whisperer,”traveled all over the state of Maine helping customers with their horse problems.
George was a member of First Baptist Church in Bangor where he was baptized many years ago. After becoming a member, George began serving in the church on committees and repairing many items in the church. Eventually, his service included becoming the president of the church. He has fond memories of helping prepare one huge Easter breakfast when the eggs started to turn green. Although he was able to fix it, he wouldn’t share the top secret solution to the green egg problem. He also had a secret to the delicious ham served at these breakfasts. George would add a can of pineapple along with the juice, and that secret was carefully guarded for many years.
He was a member of the Rising Virtue Lodge #10, commonly known as the Masons. George was a proud member of the Anah Shrine Temple mini bike troup and participated in parades all over the state of Maine. At one time, George served as an aide to the Potentate.
When he moved into the Ellen Leach Home, George became known as the “Muffin Man” for the delicious muffins that he baked and shared with all the residents. The muffin tradition began as a way to cheer up his neighbor at Ellen Leach who was going through dialysis. The neighbor enjoyed the muffins so much that George decided to share them with everyone.
Along with his parents, George was predeceased by his wife, Paula (Adams) McLeod, his wife, Dorothy (Arbo) McLeod, his son, Jeffery McLeod, his son-in-law, Paul Knowlton, his siblings, John McLeod, Edwin McLeod, Daniel McLeod, and Elizabeth (McLeod) Hutchins. He is survived by his daughter Davia Knowlton of Bangor and two children from a previous marriage, his daughter-in-law, Patty Reneau McLeod of Levant, his grandchildren Rachel McLeod and husband Lenny of Bangor, Ben McLeod and wife Mallory of Lewiston, Jon McLeod of Orono, and Sam McLeod and wife Kelsey of St. Charles, Missouri, and great-grandchildren Danny and Abel McLeod of St. Charles, Missouri.
