Gerald Dumas

January 2, 1932 — March 3, 2020

January 2, 1932 – Millinocket – A son born to Natalie Jeanette (St. John) Dumas and Ernest Oliver Dumas. He journeyed here for 88 years and left us March 3, 2020. Jerry spent his early years in Millinocket, with his sister Lois Ann, moving with his family to Lamoine in 1944. Jerry graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1950. He attended Maine Maritime Academy before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1952, where he was selected for the Security Service. From England to Washington state he served his country for four years. On June 27, 1953, he married Nancy McDonald, the girl next door, and for nearly 67 years they traveled the road as one, with devotion, loyalty, and love. In Tacoma, Washington their son Robert was born, followed by daughter Lise in Ellsworth, Maine. For the rest of his life, Jerry was a loving and caring father.
Following his service in the Air Force, Jerry made his career with the Maine Central Railroad as a telegrapher, retiring as station agent in 1992. Jerry had been a member of the Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion and for more than 50 years, a member of Lygonia Lodge AF & AM. Retirement brought new opportunities: volunteering at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, spending time with friends at the YMCA, and enjoying art classes at the Moore Community Center. Another highlight was travel, including to Cancun, Mexico, where he and Nancy became part of a family of many dear friends. Among his lifelong pleasures were basketball, pool and reading, and he especially enjoyed the game of chess with grandson Elliot.
His was a life of integrity, with a deep spiritual core of gratitude and humility. One was not judged in his presence, and while never promoting himself, people were naturally attracted to him. His warm smile, sense of humor and generous spirit leave us special memories of a loving husband, father and friend. His kind presence made the world a better place and we are saddened by the loss of his bright smile, which helped to light our days.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents; sister Lois Ann Weaver; brothers-in-law Frank Weaver and Charles McDonald, and nephew Ronnie Weaver. He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; son Robert Dumas and wife Nancy of Lamoine; daughter Lise Wallace of Hull’s Cove; grandson Elliot Wallace of Fairfield; grandniece, Kriston Wilson and husband Shawn of Windsor, California; sister-in-law Jane Fowler and husband Jay of Lamoine; brother-in-law Robert McDonald of Lamoine, and cousins. Among the treasured friends who mourn his loss are Fredi, Aija, Betta, and Elza Cahn of Lamoine and Joe Grickis of Hancock. They hold a special place of gratitude with the Dumas family.
