Gladys Ellen (Butler) Knowles, 81, died June 22, 2023 at her home in Georgetown, Kentucky after a brief illness. She was born August 22, 1941, in Pittsfield, Maine, the daughter of Edward Butler and Shirley Spencer.
Gladys relocated to Hermon with her father and stepmother Gladys Butler where she lived for 70+ years. She relocated to Kentucky after the death of her beloved husband Barry in 2016.
Gladys graduated from Hermon High School, Class of 1959. She attended Beal Business College and graduated in 1960. Gladys married and raised four daughters. During the early 1970’s she worked for NH Bragg & Sons as a credit clerk and retired 20 years later. In 1978 she married Barry F. Knowles. They built a life over the next 38 years centered around family, community and travel. Gladys spent those years with Barry deeply involved in community organizations. She was the Post Matron of the Jonathan Hunt Chapter #9 Eastern Star, a life long member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #200 Hermon, a member of the Hermon HS Alumni Committee, a founding member of the Hermon Veterans’ Memorial Park and Monument committee, a member of B.A.S.S.-Bangor Area Stroke Support, a volunteer at Easter Maine Medical Center-palliative care and a proud volunteer with the Troop Greeters who met our service members at Bangor International Airport as they deployed and returned from overseas tours during both conflicts in the Middle East during the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Gladys loved bluegrass and country music. She spent a lifetime knitting and crocheting for family and friends and loved cats! She also loved boating and being at the lake. Gladys became very ingrained in her new community in Georgetown and spent many hours at the senior community center socializing and traveling around Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Gladys spent her last years enjoying her new Kentucky adventure and spending precious time with her family. She was beloved by all and will be dearly missed.
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Lori (and Alan) Hicks of Georgetown, Kentucky, Diana Olmstead of Somerville, Maine, Deborah Bozeman of Hampstead, North Carolina, Brenda Potter (and Darryl) of Sharon, Vermont; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; her siblings Edward Butler, Jr (and Angie), Rosemary Bartlett (and Richard) of Hermon and Frank Butler of Florida; and her dearest friend of over forty years Linda Webster of Hermon, BFF.
