Glenice Sawyer

July 14, 1928 — March 13, 2015

Glenice Sawyer, 86, wife of the late Dr. Everett A. Sawyer, O.D. died peacefully, with her family by her side, March 13, 2015, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born July 14, 1928, in Orrington, daughter of Vernon and Beulah (Hardison) Smith.

She was a graduate of Brewer High School, Class of 1946. She remained close with classmates and continued to enjoy monthly lunches with them. After graduation she was employed with Merrill Trust Company in Bangor. Glenice worked as a medical secretary in Boston while Everett attended optometry school and later worked at Sears Roebuck Company after they returned to Bangor. She was also a community correspondent for the Bangor Daily News. She established and operated the Korner Kitchen luncheonette in downtown Bangor in the late 1970's.

Glenice was a member of the East Orrington Congregational Church. She was a past noble grand and past district deputy president of the Vashti Rebekah Lodge. She was a former member and past president of the Orrington Garden Club and past lecturer of the Enterprise Grange. Glenice was active in the production of Orrington's Bi-Centennial Pageant and community presentation of "Nashville Comes to Orrington." She worked as a volunteer at EMMC and the Collins Center for the Arts.

During the summers, Glenice could be found at the family camp at Beech Hill Pond where she enjoyed swimming and playing cards with her children and grandchildren. The family went on many canoe trips, including the Allagash, camping trips and a summer-long road trip to Alaska. After retirement, she and Everett enjoyed spending winters in Arizona. Glenice was very creative and enjoyed painting, quilting, and rug hooking with the Tuesday "hookers."

Surviving are, two sons, Jeffrey Sawyer, O.D. and his wife, Lori of Holden, Randolph Sawyer, O.D. of Portland; two granddaughters, Jessica Thiel and her husband, Jeffrey of Chicago, and Nicole Sawyer of Portland; two grandsons, Andrew Sawyer and his wife, Jennifer of New Haven, CT., David Sawyer and his wife, Rachel of Alexandria, VA. ; three great grandchildren, Hunter and Adelaide Thiel and Emelia Sawyer; one sister, Louise M. Perkins of Orrington, many nieces and nephews, and her dear friend, Hank Trahan, who has lovingly cared for her over the last several years.

She was predeceased by siblings, Geneva Whiting, Glendon Smith and Pauline Bennett.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday March 18, 2015 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer.

A service in celebration of her life will be held this summer at a time to be announced.
