Granville Hammond

March 23, 1931 — October 4, 2013

Granville T. “Tom” Hammond passed away peacefully at his home in Brewer, October 4, 2013, after a long illness. Tom was born in Bangor, March 23, 1931, son of the late Gerald H. and Pauline (Granville) Hammond.

Tom graduated from Bangor High School, class of 1949. At the age of 15, he worked for the A&P, and worked in many stores as a department head and manager. He accumulated more than 40 years until the stores closed. Tom then went to work for the State of Maine Liquor Commission until his retirement.

Tom was with the 195th Army Band and played his trumpet for many occasions and functions, which he enjoyed very much. After the band left the area, he joined the Naval Reserves and completed his 20 years of service. Tom was also an avid baseball and football fan, supporting his favorite teams: the Red Sox, the Patriots, and the Giants.

In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by his first wife, Joan Leighton. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne (Robbins) Hammond;his dear sister, Geraldine H. Cyr; children, Jeffrey Hammond, Cathy Hammond and “Bonnie” (Hammond) Weeks and her husband, Dennis; grandchildren, Stephanie Sherburne and her husband, Mike; Joseph Hammond and his wife, Lindsay; and Matthew and Tyler Weeks; special great-grandchildren, Grace, Lauren, Sophie and Elizabeth; as well as many special nieces and nephews and sisters and brothers-in-law. He was loved by all and will be missed greatly.

A memorial service will be held 1 PM, Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Brookings-Smith Brewer Chapel, 55 South Main Street, Brewer with Rev. Dr. Rex H. Garrett, director of Chaplaincy services at EMMC, officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 12 PM until the time of service, Thursday. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer, immediately following the service. The family invites relatives and friends to share in conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Reception Rooms of the Brewer Chapel, following the interment.
