BANGOR - Gwendolyn L. Kelley, 96, passed into the hands of her Savior November 6, 2023, at a Bangor healthcare facility, after a short illness. She was born April 9, 1927, in Jonesport, the daughter of Raymond and Adra (Seavey) Kelley.
Gwen graduated from Jonesport High, Class of 1944. After spending a few years at home, working in clam and sardine factories, she moved to Portland where she worked at the City Hall as a clerk typist. She applied for Federal Service and worked for the Department of Commerce, first at Boothbay Harbor and then transferred to Woods Hole, Mass. She won many awards and citations for her work there.
Gwen was a member of Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church in Jonesport and then became a member of the Advent Christian Church in Bangor in her retirement years.
Gwen loved knitting, making many sweaters for family members. She enjoyed sewing and embroidering. She was also an avid reader; instilling the love of books into sister Pat at an early age.
In addition to her parents, Gwen was predeceased by her sisters, Virginia Worcester and her husband, Roscoe, Ethelyn Haines and her husband, Harold, and Mertie Alley and her husband, Howard; brothers, Royal and spouse; Willis and Manfred Kelley; brother-in-law, Alvah Beal Sr.; nephews, Robert Kelley, and James Beal Sr.; nieces, Susan Gross, Linda Ledger; & grand-nieces, Melissa Beal and Carolee Geel.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 1-2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor with a funeral service held immediately after. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 17, 2023, in Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
