Harold “Pete” Grass, 85, passed away peacefully at Maine Veteran’s Home, October 30, 2013. Pete was born in Oxbow Plantation, July 16, 1928, son of Roy and Rena (Conley) Grass.
Pete began his working life at a very young age, taking a job on the railroad in order to help support his family. When he got his license, he took a job as a truck driver. He continued to drive trucks, working for a few different companies, but notably Bangor Bottling Co. for 12 years, Fox and Ginn for 25 years and St. Johnsbury for 8 years.
Pete was a member of the Eagles Club, Penobscot Aerie #3177, and the Bangor Lodge of Elks, B.P.O.E. #244. Pete played a masterful game of cribbage. He was always ready for a “best out of five games for a hundred”.
Pete’s idea of heaven was a weekend spent at his home in Lily Bay, on Moosehead Lake. When he retired, Pete took to making the camp into a home, where he and his family spent many enjoyable visits. Pete was always a simple, hardworking, hard playing man. He would look out for others before himself, never hesitating to help a neighbor in need.
In addition to his parents, Pete was predeceased by two wives, Mary Ellen (Bell) Grass, and Sue-Ann Reese-Grass, as well as several siblings, his brother, Merle Grass , and sisters Esther Austin, Maxine Day, and most recently, his sister, Barbara Hewes.
He is survived by his five sons, Peter Grass of Old Orchard Beach; Richard Baker III and his wife, Faith, stationed in Anchorage, AK; Robert Baker and his wife Amy of Brewer; Randy Baker and Ryan Baker, both of Brewer; grandchildren, Sebastian and Jessica Grass, Harlie-Sue Murph and her husband, David, Samantha, Chase, Lindsey, Landon, Kristy, Drew, Trey, Rece, Emily and Rebecca Baker; sisters, Lois Roy and her husband, Lou, of NH; and Catherine Kearton of Calif.; brother Lester Conley of Mich.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
