Harry C. Whelden, Jr., 96, loving husband of Jane (Treadwell Fox) Whelden, passed away peacefully September 16, 2020 at his home. He was born July 12, 1924 in Derby Connecticut, the son of Harry Crossman Sr. and Jeanette Allen Whelden
Harry graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1948 and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He worked as an extension service Poultry Specialist at the University of Vermont, University of Connecticut and then The University of Maine until 1979. As a Poultry Specialist he was instrumental in developing strategic management practices to benefit the farmer and the poultry industry. Harry spoke to poultry groups throughout the country and abroad. He was awarded several honors including National Poultry Science Association specialist of the year in 1961 and Maine Poultry Association Federation award in 1979. He served on the first committee for establishment of the Central Maine Egg Festival. Upon retiring from the extension service, he consulted for the Poultry Industry in Maine.
Harry was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, canoeing, snowmobiling, traveling to and working his Tree Farm and gardening. He volunteered for food pantries and conservation organizations. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Orono.
Harry’s greatest joy was his family and the memories. Surviving in addition to his wife, Jane are three children, Harry C. Whelden III, Jennifer R.W. Kamrath and Howard C. Whelden Sr., 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, a sister Evelyn Vargoshe, nieces, and nephews.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, services and burial will be private in Orono.
