Harvey Cawley

HERMON - Harvey Cawley died February 9, 2014 at home in Hermon, Maine, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 3, 1926 in Calais, Maine, the son of Foster and Winifred Cawley. He grew up in Robbinston where he attended grade school and graduated from high school at Calais Academy in 1943. Shortly after he enlisted in the Navy, received training at Aviation Machinist School, was assigned to the first stateside weather squadron and flew in a PB4Y2 plane, the Privateer, a newer version of the B-24. Honorably discharged in Boston, MA in June 1946 he returned to Robbinston. In 1949 he married Beverly Brooks of Reading, MA. In 1955 he began his career at Public Service Company of New Hampshire as a power plant control room operator at the coal-fire Schiller Station and later at the new oil-fired Newington Station, retiring in 1986 after 32 years of employment. In 1958 they bought their family home in Dover, NH and after retirement moved to Hermon in 1987.

Harvey was predeceased by his wife Beverly of 55 years, his sister Lois Kavanaugh of Robbinston, and his brother Laird of Robbinston. Harvey and Beverly have four children; Brian and his wife Ruth of Richmond have two sons; Jason of South Portland and his son Tyler and daughter Jasmine, and Dan and his wife Stacy of Cameroon, Africa, have a son Micah and a daughter Adah; Marcia (Cawley) and her husband Fran Wren of Hermon have two sons and a daughter, Andrew of Hermon, Alex and his girlfriend Nichole and their son Landon of Hermon, Caitlin and her son Ethan of Yarmouth. Blair and his wife Deborah of Stetson have eight children; Kathryn and Dan Miller of Corinna have four daughters, Acadia, Lily, Beatrix and Juniper, Benjamin and his wife Sarah of Plymouth have two sons, Oliver and Quinn, Cynthia and her husband Joshua Snowman of Corinna, Rebekah and her husband Gary Decker of Carmel have a son and a daughter, Evan and Addison, Susannah and her husband Jeff Drinkwater of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Elisabeth of Bangor; and Nathan and Noah of Stetson; Gail (Cawley) and her husband Steve Orvis of Wakefield, New Hampshire have a daughter and a son, Bailey and Foster.

Harvey was an avid outdoorsman whose favorite spot was fishing the Tomah Stream region of Washington County with his life-long friend, Niles Tracy. He was a self-taught woodworker who built three cedar-ribbed canoes, carved loons and many other projects. He had a wonderful nurse care manager, Cynthia Herrick, who supported him through his health challenges. Dr. James VanKirk was a wonderful, caring physician who assisted the family during Harvey’s last days and honoring Harvey’s last wishes.

A memorial service will be held 10am Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor with the Rev. Jonathan Wright Gray officiating. Spring interment will be in the Brewer Cemetery, Robbinston. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, immediately following the service Saturday.
