HAMPDEN and BANGOR - On Tuesday, December 1, 2020, Herbert Warren Mitchell passed away at the age of 83. Herb was born in 1937 in Bangor, Maine to David and Helen Mitchell. Herb graduated from Bangor High School and in 1959 married Shirley Ann Blais, raising two sons, David, II of Abington, Massachusetts and Tom of Owasso, Oklahoma.
Herb retired as the Assistant Terminal Manager of the CITGO Petroleum Corporation’s Braintree Terminal after a forty-year career with Cities Service Company / CITGO Petroleum Corporation. Herb held various positions within the company in Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oklahoma, but primarily in the Boston area. Herb and Shirley returned to Maine in 2002 after they built a new home in Hampden. In 2019 Herb relocated to Oklahoma to be close to his son, Tom and his family.
Herb had a passion for antiques and old cars. He spent many hours searching flea markets and auctions for treasures to take home and restore back to their former glory. He also restored his 1947 Chevrolet pickup truck and his 1951 Ford Custom. Herb was well known for his dry sense of humor, quick wit and his kind, compassionate heart. His favorite football team was the NY Giants and at times went outside to honk the horn on his truck to let the neighbors know his team won. He also favored his beloved Red Sox. He loved to fish and he would tell everyone he didn’t eat sweets but if you left cake or cookies near him, they magically disappeared.
Herb was preceded in death by his father, David; mother, Helen; wife, Shirley; and son David N. II. He is survived by his son, Tom and his wife, Laketa; granddaughters, Kelsey, MacKenzie, and Alison; David’s family, Mary, grandchildren Kristen, Kelly and David N., III as well as 3 great grandchildren.
A memorial service for Herb will be held in Bangor, Maine at a later date.
As a young boy, Herb spent time at the Shriners Hospital in Boston for corrective surgery. He had fond memories of the nurses that helped him there and Shriners were close to his heart. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to:
