ORONO - Herman Ellery Hallett, 97, passed away peacefully October 1, 2022, at Orono Commons, where he resided for the last eight years living with dementia. He was born May 23, 1925, in Bridgewater, the son of John H. and Emma P. (Delong) Hallett.
Herman grew up in Mars Hill and was the youngest of 13 siblings. He was a member the Navy Armed Guard during World War II serving on several Merchant “Liberty” ships. While home on leave, he was introduced to his future wife, Beverly. Herman and Beverly (Brooks) were married June 16, 1951, in Concord, New Hampshire. In 1964, they purchased their first and only home in Northern Maine Junction, Hermon, where they lived for over 50 years.
Herman learned carpentry work from his brothers, John and Bob, and he worked for Owen Gray & Son for more than 30 years perfecting finish carpentry work. He was meticulous and professional, both in the quality of his workmanship as well as clean up and care of the personal surroundings where he was working. Although Herman was a top-notch finish carpenter, he didn’t personally appreciate the talent he had; it was “just my job.” His true love was cars and rebuilding cars. He participated in some local drag races and also repaired many totaled cars. He would take a good front end of a certain model vehicle and a good back end of the same model vehicle and weld them together, making one complete, inspectable car out of two damaged ones in the same meticulous way he worked in doing anything. He spent countless hours puttering in the garage, always doing some project. Even these last years of his life at Orono Commons have been spent “puttering” in one way or another, as the staff can attest.
Herman was a truly devoted family man. Coming from a large family, many weekends were filled spending time with his brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews, helping out with a project, having a meal together or playing poker. He would always stop what he was doing to lend a hand to family or friend.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by all of his siblings; his wife, in 2020. He is survived by his son, William Hallett and his wife, Jean, of Titusville, Florida; daughter, Kimberly Demmons and her husband, Dennis, of Bangor; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Bill and Kim would like to thank the staff at Orono Commons for their devoted care watching over their dad and keeping him safe throughout all his adventures there.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 22, 2022, at Evergreen Cemetery, Hermon.
