BANGOR – Barbara J. Hewes, 74, died August 16, 2013, at a Bangor nursing facility after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born November 8, 1938 in Oxbow, Maine, the daughter of Roy L. and Rena M. (Conley) Grass.
Barbara graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1957. Following graduation, she married Carroll I. Hewes, and they settled in Orrington. Barbara was a faithful employee for the city of Bangor for 35 years. She recently retired from Bass Park after serving as the box office manager for many years. Barbara loved to bowl and had many fond memories from years spent at Family Fun Bowling Center. Barb was an avid sports fan and had a true love for the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. She was a devoted grandmother and attended every sporting event possible that her granddaughters played in. The family would like to thank the staff at Ross Manor, Dr. Rutstein and her entire staff at Maine Medical Center for their care of Barbara this past year.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Carroll, sisters, Esther Austin and Maxine Day, and brother, Meryl Grass. Surviving is her special friend, Joseph Aubin, of Hampden; sons, Mark A. Hewes and his wife, Cheryl (Harvey) Hewes, of Bar Harbor, Timothy S. Hewes and his wife, Lynn (Hodgins) Hewes, of Holden, Kevin L. Hewes and his wife, Cathy (Dumont) Hewes, of Brewer; three special granddaughters, Erika Hewes, of Bangor, Sydney Hewes, of Brewer, and Libby Hewes, of Brewer; one brother, Harold Grass, of Bangor; sisters Lois Roy, and her husband Lou, of New Hampshire, and Catherine Kearton, of California; uncle, Lester Conley, of Michigan; many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, with Andrew Files, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., following the funeral service. A private interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer, at a later time.
