Hilda R. Carlow
Jan. 10, 1919 - Aug. 27, 2016
Hilda Ruby Carlow (Ceadel), 97, died peacefully Aug 27th, 2016, in her Bangor apartment with her eldest granddaughter and her beloved caregivers by her side. Hilda was born, raised, and educated in Tottenham, London, England. In school, Hilda was a fierce netball player. After secondary school, Hilda worked at D. Gestetner, Ltd; a local stationary office.
During World War II, Hilda made her contribution to the war effort in the British Civil Service as an ambulance driver in London transporting air raid victims. She soon met the love of her life, Capt. Earle W. Carlow, who served as a combat pilot in the U. S. Army Air Force during his service in wartime England. They were married 41 years until his death in 1987. In 1946, Hilda arrived in the U. S. A. with Earle and their very young daughter, Lee. They began a new life in Skowhegan, Maine where Hilda lived in the same home until she was 93. There she was a cook at North Elementary School and also managed the Handwork, Craft, and Art/Photography Exhibits at the Skowhegan State Fair for many years. In those years, Hilda and Earle also enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their Moosehead camp in Lamb’s Cove.
Hilda was very proud to become a U. S. Citizen in 1951. She and Earle loved South Florida and eventually were able to spend every winter in Pompano Beach during retirement where she loved to stand in the surf with her seashell net collecting seashells. Hilda also had very fond memories of taking winter trips to Aruba, Cancun, Cayman Islands, and St. Thomas.
Hilda loved cooking and baking as well as anything to do with government and our court system and relished attending jury duty. She was very handy with her sewing machine, and enjoyed making outfits and accessories for her daughter and two granddaughters. She could dance the Charleston like no other and taught anyone who wished to know how to do it right! She spent hours in her swimming pool with her granddaughters; she was the Nana who jumped rope and could still ride a pogo stick well into her 50’s! Hilda even traveled back to England on many occasions to visit dear friends and family and delighted her two granddaughters by taking them there with her. Hilda made her way to Bangor a few years ago to be closer to family.
Hilda is remembered for speaking her mind and for her dry wit. During a recent hospital visit, her attending physician asked her, "What is your secret for such a long life?" Her reply…"By doing all the wrong things."
Hilda truly appreciated the companionship and care she received from Beacon Hospice and friends at Sunbury Village until her last day.
Hilda is survived by her daughter Lee C. and son-in-law Thomas DeRoche of Belfast, her two granddaughters Lisa DeRoche (Jim) DeFarges of Meshoppen, PA and Karen DeRoche (Bill) Flemion of San Simeon, CA, two great-grandchildren Mathew DeFarges and Sophie Flemion, and one niece Lynn Ceadel Allen of WV. Hilda is predeceased by her husband, Earle and brother, Arthur Ceadel.
