Irene Rose Gadoury, 94, formerly from Fitchburg, MA passed away peacefully on February 1, 2015 at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor, ME, where she has been a resident for the past 6 years.
Born in Fitchburg MA on February 2, 1920, she is the last to survive of 8 siblings of Vital and Bella (Belliveau) Leger. Graduating from St Bernard Catholic High School in 1937, Irene enlisted in Woman's Army Corp and was called to active duty on February 23, 1943. A WWII veteran having served in the Southwest Pacific under General Douglas MacArthur with the General Headquarters Regulating System, Irene was stationed in New Guinea, Australia and the Philippines from 1943 to 1945 earning the medal for Good Conduct and the rank of Master Sergeant before her honorable discharge on January 10, 1946.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Arthur Joseph (Toots) Gadoury. Irene was a dedicated Mom who enjoyed camping, fishing and outdoor activities with her family along with her volunteering as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Kingsman Drum & Bugle Corp chaperone. Irene retired from the City of Fitchburg School Dept. as well as a 39 year career as an Avon Representative earning Presidential Club status, she also held administrative positions with Crocker Burbank Paper Company and Manpower Inc. of Fitchburg MA. Irene was a member of American Legion Post 429 and the VFW Post in Fitchburg, MA.
Irene is survived by her loving children Thomas "Tom" Gadoury and his wife Cheryl of Clifton Park, NY, Paul "PJ" Gadoury and his wife Lisa of Hampden, ME and Richard "Dick" Gadoury and his wife Joan of Fitchburg, MA along with 6 grandchildren, Nicole White, Krisann Gadoury, Adam Gadoury, Sean Gadoury, Morgan Smith and Jordan Gadoury and 4 great-grandchildren Zella, Patrick, Sophia, Silas.
The family would like to thank the Maine Veterans Home entire staff for the excellent care and kindness that was provided on D Unit where she resided. Also we would like to thank Jennifer Harvey, PA-C, for her professional and compassionate care. Irene enjoyed playing the piano, and participating in the many activities provided at the Veterans Home.
A private memorial will be held at a later date in the spring at Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Maine Veterans Home, Activities Dept., 44 Hogan Rd, Bangor, ME 04401.
