DIXMONT Irene M. Smith (Sawyer) went home to be with her Lord on 9/20/23. She was born on 6/11/37, daughter of Reverend James and Ida Sawyer (Morgan) who passed away in 1942 and Minnie Sawyer (Dawes).
We have been truly blessed to have such loving parents. Mom exemplified God’s love and will be greatly missed by all. We know that when she left us, she was immediately in the arms of Jesus.
She graduated from Crosby High School and Nyack College and was a Maine Rural Bible Teacher when she met Charlie. They were married for 50 wonderful years until his death in 2011. She is survived by her daughters Linda Smart, husband Eric and son Ethan; Brenda Daigle, husband Richard, daughter Chelsea and sons Joshua and Jason; her sister Clara Smith, husband Eugene, and sons Jim, Frank and Richard; and the rest of our very special family and friends.
We were blessed with the opportunity to travel with our father, a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, as he served his country in Texas, Taiwan, Vietnam, Turkey, Alaska and Maryland. Mom taught school in Texas, Alaska and Maryland and worked at Lambs and Knapps in Bangor.
We are so thankful for all the prayers and for those that helped us as we cared for mom – the medical staff, our cousins Lois Thew and Deb Smith, and the Northern Lights Hospice staff who were wonderful at the very end when we really needed their support.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 PM Friday, 10/6/23, at East Dixmont Community Church at 34 Church Hill Rd, Dixmont with Pastor Tim Boone officiating. A time of fellowship and refreshment will follow the celebration at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Newburgh Regional Food Pantry at 363 Lindsey Rd, Newburgh ME 04444 or to her church at EDCC, PO Box 34, Dixmont, ME 04932.
