James Chalmers, 85, passed away September 6, 2020 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bangor. He was born February 23, 1935 in Belfast and grew up in Brewer. He was prone to getting into mischief with his friends in Brewer which provided countless hours of stories to share with his kids.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, John and Gertrude Chalmers and his sisters, Rebecca and Barbara. He is survived by his former wife, Shirley; his son, Steven; his daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Tom; his brother, Ronald “Buddy” and his grandson, Ethan, who he was so very proud of. He was also grampy to many foster children who he thought of as his own. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Jim served his country in the U.S. Army and later worked for the Maine Central Railroad for many years. After retirement he worked at Center Drive School in Orrington where he was affectionally known by the kids as "the candy man", always having a pocket full of candy for them.
Jim's biggest passion was hunting and fishing and spending time at the camp. He had so many great times with Buddy, Steve and Mark. He made lifelong friends during these trips and held on to those memories, even as his health began to fail.
Jim and Shirley built their home in Orrington, where they continued to live for over 50 years. They had wonderful neighbors and spent many weekends taking the whole family on day long snowmobile trips. He was often seen working in his vegetable garden and was always proud to have the first peas for the 4th of July cookout.
Jim was feisty and stubborn and remained that way his entire life! But there was never a time that seeing a baby or puppy wouldn't bring a smile to his face. Cathy was able to sneak a puppy in one day and Sheena became his best buddy for the next 14 years.
A private graveside service will be held for family. Anyone wishing to honor his memory is asked to simply pay if forward, help someone else, and make the world a better place to live in.
