James “Jim” F. Doughty, of Bangor and Prospect Harbor, Maine, died unexpectedly on Monday, February, 28, 2022 at his son’s home in Bangor. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family. Jim was born on May 26, 1938 in Bangor, the son of George L. Sr. and Marion (Brown) Doughty.
Jim was a graduate of Bangor High School, Class of 1956. Following graduation, he earned his undergraduate degree from Husson College and a Master’s degree from Boston University.
As a career educator in Maine, Jim worked in several teaching and administration positions in Monson, Greenville, Searsport and Orono, Maine. After nearly a decade as the Superintendent of Orono school system, he served as the Assistant Dean of the School of Education at the University of Maine. His seven years at the university were followed by 18 years as the Superintendent of the Bangor school system until his retirement in 2001. Upon his retirement, the Bangor School Committee honored him by renaming Fifth Street Middle School after him.
During his career, Jim employed an approach to education centered on the philosophy “that all children can learn, and learn at a high level.” This approach resulted in great success. Bangor City Schools thrived in all areas of education, athletics and the arts.
Family was the driving focus of his personal life. Those that are left to cherish memories of Jim are his wife, Susan (Bell) Doughty; daughter, Jennifer J. Doughty of Fredericksburg, VA, and son, James B. Doughty of Bangor; and three grandchildren.
