James Hawks Ii

March 21, 1980 — September 28, 2020

Bangor – James W. Hawks II, 40, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 28, 2020. James was born on March 21, 1980 in Libby, Montana, the son of James Sr. and Mary (Gregory) Hawks.

James went to Bangor High School and graduated the class of 1998. After graduation and the events of September 11, 2001, James felt called to join the Air Force. While in the Air Force, James was a recipient of the “John Levitow Award,” which was a remarkable achievement in the Air Force by being at the top one percent of your class. James also received the Air Force training ribbon; Global War on Terror Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Reserve Force Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force longevity Service Ribbon; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. James excelled in satellite communications and was deeply honored to serve his country. After James was honorably discharged from the service, he came back home to Maine and worked diligently to obtain his Associates Degree in Liberal Studies at Eastern Maine Community College and most recently started his journey towards his Bachelor’s Degree at The University of Maine in Anthropology with a minor in History, which was his dream job.

When James wasn’t working hard at his academics, he was a Gryffindor after all, you could find him ears deep in 80’s music, playing the guitar, grilling, hand-making clocks, practicing Tae Kwon Do (he was a second degree black belt and had a passion for martial arts since he was 11 years old), fishing, camping, watching New England sports, star-gazing (Betelgeuse was his favorite star), tending to his bird feeders and flower gardens, reading, watching, and studying all things Archaeology related. James’s life-long passion was to discover the origins of man and Archaeology drove his passion. Overall, James just wanted to learn and discover more about the universe. Whenever you glance upon a red cardinal or a sunflower know that James would be smiling and appreciating their beauty.

James is survived by his parents, James Sr. and Mary Hawks; sisters, Katie Hawks and husband Scout Hughes and Elizabeth Hawks and partner Mark Heffner; his nephews, Grayson and Mark Heffner Jr.; niece, Alyssa Heffner; his special partner, Caitlin Elkins and her mother, Nancy Glidden; our family dog, Coco and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins spread from Maine to Montana. He was predeceased in life by his paternal grandparents, Bernard Sr. and Laura Jean (Wilkes) Hawks, maternal grandparents, Patrick L. and Mary T. Gregory and his cousin, Lyndsay Moore.
