James Mackintosh

December 28, 1930 β€” June 20, 2015

J. Donald β€œDon” Mackintosh, 84, died June 20th, following a valiant battle with cancer. He was born December 28, 1930, in Carbondale, PA, the son of John Hamilton and Helen Powell (Herbert) Mackintosh.

Don grew up in Bangor and graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1948. He briefly attended the University of Maine and, in 1950, enrolled at the General Motors Institute in Flint, MI. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952, where he trained as a fighter pilot. On leave from the service, he met Janet Lu Oliver while visiting friends at UMO, which she attended. They were married in Orono on August 7, 1954. Later that year, Don returned to General Motors Institute, studying Engineering and graduating in 1956.

A career-long affiliation with General Motors ensued. Don returned to the Bangor area in 1960 and, with his brother J. Herbert Mackintosh, established Twin City Buick in Brewer, where he served as President until 1978. In 1983, Don purchased Dow Motors in Ellsworth and remained President there until his retirement in 1988. He was also a founding member of the Board of Directors of the reorganized Merrill Bank.

Don and his family resided in Holden from 1963 to 1982. He was subsequently a resident of Carrabassett Valley (Sugarloaf), Marlboro Beach (Lamoine) and Northeast Harbor – places that allowed him to pursue his love of skiing and boating. In 2009, Don and Jan began to divide their time between Northeast Harbor and St. Simons Island, GA.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Janet (Oliver) Mackintosh, are his daughters, Lisa Mackintosh and her husband, Anthony Garvin, of Mahwah, NJ, and Jamie Mackintosh and her husband Michael Rheam, of Wilson, WY; one grandchild, Emery Rheam; his sister-in-law Patricia and nephew Jon Mackintosh. Don was predeceased by his brother and two nephews, Peter and Robbie Mackintosh.

Friends and acquaintances are invited to visit family and share memories of Don from 6-8 PM, Monday, June 29, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St, Bangor. Those who wish to remember Don in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Mary Dow Cancer Center, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, 50 Union St, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
