SUMMERFIELD, FL AND HAMPDEN - James Joseph Mooney, 89, passed away from pancreatic cancer on March 26, 2015, at a Summerfield Fla. healthcare facility. He was born March 23, 1926, in Brewer, the son of John and Mary (Cox) Mooney.
James was a lifelong resident of Hampden and a communicant of St. Matthews’s church in Hampden. He was a graduate of John Bapst High School, class of 1943 and graduated from the University of Maine. In his early years James joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in Germany. James married Frances (McDonough) Mooney together they raised four children and operated the family business Stern's lumber Company Inc. James was a past president of the Retail Lumber Dealer's Association of Maine, served on the board of directors of the Northeastern Retail Lumber Dealer's Association and was the Maine Lumberman of the year. James played a key role in the planning of St. Matthews’s church in Hampden. He was very proud to be involved in that process. James served on the Hampden water district board and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
James enjoyed his winters in Florida, his boxer dogs, the Red Sox, playing Bridge and a good Martini. James would spend his summers at the family camp on Green Lake; here they created life long memories. James was a loving Husband, Father and Grandfather. He will be sadly missed.
James is survived by his four children, Mary Jane Mackenzie of Hampden, James J. Mooney Jr. and his wife Stephanie of Hampden, John G. Mooney of Bangor, and Patrick M. Mooney and his wife Debbie of Millinocket ; one sister Margaret Yargates of Pennsylvania, grandchildren, Jennifer Haskell, Patsy Oversmith, Emily LeBlanc, Robert Mackenzie, Bridget Perry, James Mooney 111, Thomas Mooney, Sara Mooney-Martin, Laura Mooney, Nicholas Mooney, Kristen Nadeau, and Alexandria Mooney, and 20 great grandchildren. One niece, Rebecca Kane, 5 nephews, Phillip and Mark Coffin, Thomas and Michael Carey, and John Yargates. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years Frances Mooney, second wife Dolores Gherardini, sister Frances Coffin, brother in laws Paul Yargates and Phillip Coffin, sister in law Patricia Carey and son in law Robert Mackenzie.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-8 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 70 Western Ave., Hampden, 11 a.m., Friday, April 10, 2015, followed by the Rite of Committal at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at 29 Marion Dr., Hampden following the interment.
