Bangor - Petty Officer 1st Class, Jim Nelligan, 84, died July 1, 2021 at a Bangor Hospital. He was born on September 01, 1936, in Bangor, the son of William E. Nelligan and Mary (Leary) Nelligan.
He attended John Bapst High School. Jim served 21 years in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Machinist's Mate and Air Crewman, retiring in 1976.
Awards received include, Navy Commendation Medal with a Combat V, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct (fifth award), Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a member of the following associations: Fleet Reserve Branch 156, U.S.S. Leyte CV-32, A-3 Sky warrior, VQ-1, HC-1 Det 3, and the Maine Aviation Historical Society Maine Air Museum. Jim enjoyed attending several Navy reunions each year, traveling all over the United States.
Following retirement from the Navy, Jim worked for 21 years for the Bangor School Department, retiring in 1997 as Head Custodian at Fruit Street School. He was a communicant of St. John's Catholic Church in Bangor, Maine.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 33 years, Eva Cline Nelligan in November of 2005, his brother, Bill Nelligan in February of 2005, and niece, Kathy Nelligan Smith in October of 2019.
He is survived by sister-in-Law, Sally Nelligan of Calais, niece, Suzanne Kelley (Tim) of Calais, nephews, William Nelligan (Dawn) of Higganum, CT and Thomas Nelligan (Thelma) of Belfast, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. Also, brother-in-law, Roy Cline and his wife, Caryl of Cody, Wyoming.
At Jim’s request a private burial will be at the Maine Veteran's Cemetery in Augusta next to his beloved wife, with full military honors.
