James Pooler

July 27, 1937 β€” April 21, 2020

BREWER – James F. Pooler, Jr., 82, passed away on April 21, 2020 at his home. He was born on July 27, 1937 in Brewer, the son of James, Sr. and Grace (Doughty) Pooler.

James was raised in Brewer and, although he lived in other places, Brewer will always be his home. He graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1955. Two years later he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Mary Hall and together they raised a family and enjoyed 62 years of marriage. His home and family were the most important things in his life.

James worked at and eventually owned the family business, Gold Star Cleaners of Brewer. Eventually he sold the business to his son, Eric (starting the fourth generation of ownership). Having retired early he and Ruth Mary enjoyed traveling the U.S., many islands (give him the tradewinds anytime!), and spent several winters in Florida. What James most enjoyed was time spent with his grandchildren, he enjoyed going to their sporting events and loved sports, and fishing with family and friends. No one ever walked away a stranger once they met James, he talked to everybody and anybody, and then he’d talk some more. Sports and politics were his main subject, but he was a gifted story teller, always making everyone laugh. He will be fondly remembered for puttering outside around his house and smoking cigars.

James was a longstanding member of the Brewer Kiwanis Club, served on the Brewer City Council, was an original member of the Brewer Recreational Department, and along with friends helped organize the Brewer High School R.O.T.C.

In addition to his wife, Ruth Mary Pooler, James is survived by his sons, Mark of Lithia Springs, GA, David of Holden, and Eric of Glenburn; grandchildren, Melissa Matthews, Aaron Pooler, Benjamin Pooler, Nicholas Pooler, Landen Pooler, Monique Pooler, and Jacob Pooler; great-grandchild, Shane Matthew; and sister, Dolores Bagish. In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his brothers, Edward, Peter, and Michael; and sister, Sandra Howe.

A memorial service at the East Orrington Congregational Church will be announced at a later date. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
